A typical Turbine system uses Turbine Oil as a fluid for operation. The system typically uses a sump to store the oil, a high pressure pump to circulate the oil at desired pressure for hassle free turbine working, and a series of control valves to accurately manage the operational movements. For any equipment “hydraulic system performance” is the KEY indicator for “Higher Productivity” measurement.

VATS manufacture its own filter cartridges, and we have developed high efficiency special graded density depth filters for the application. The high dirt holding capacity with moisture separator helps the cartridges last much longer before they need to be replaced.
The filtration systems, using these cartridges, are also designed as extremely compact, quick connect machines.

Turbine Oil

Contamination of this turbine oil, by particulate matter and moisture, is the main cause of any failures or under-performance of this system. It is hence essential that these contaminants are kept below a certain level AT ALL TIMES.

All systems typically use an online filter in the return oil line. This filter is expected to be replaced after a specified period of operation. But even this may not be enough, and the entire oil in the system needs to be replaced after regular intervals. It is often observed that the top up or refill done in the field using fresh barrel oil, does not measure up to the purity standard expected, and the system resumes operation with an initial load.

Oil Purity: The NAS numbers

Oil Purity is typically represented by its NAS number, which is a measure of particulate contamination, indicating the number of particles found across different sizes.

Hydraulic systems, depending upon the criticality of the operation, specify the limiting NAS levels, which typically would range for NAS 7 to NAS 4 ( NAS 7 contains 8 times the contamination, compared to NAS 4). Filter replacements and oil changes happen during maintenance, and the NAS levels then could be as high as 12 to 14. This means that the system typically is subject to a much higher average NAS level during the operation.
